Tips for donating used furniture

Regardless of whether you are hiring Sierra Vista movers and moving or need to upgrade at home, maybe it is time to say goodbye to old furniture. From outdated student futons to luxurious décor, not all furniture is designed to stay in your home forever. Fortunately, there are a number of non-profit organizations and charitable organizations that will gladly accept donations of furniture. If you’re wondering where to do donating used furniture, take a look at these five suggestions below.

5 organizations for donating used furniture

DonationTown

Not sure which charity will accept your donation? DonationTown will take care of this for you. All you need to do is enter your zip code, and DonationTown will provide a list of available charities in your area. From there you will plan a free collection of donations. DonationTown is available in major cities throughout the United States.

Coffee table and chairs

According to their website, you can donate pieces of furniture, including small chairs, nightstands, coffee tables, small bookshelves, and small rugs

Goodwill

Goodwill Industries International is one of the most well-known charities in the country. And with 3,200 stores across the country, finding a Goodwill location near you will not be a problem. A charitable organization provides vocational training, employment services and other community programs for the poor. The organization accepts new and neatly used clothing and household items for sale in its stores and on its online auctions. When someone buys your furniture from Goodwill, the money will go to promote charity. To donate your furniture before the move, just leave everything at the local Goodwill Donation Center. Many Goodwill locations also offer pickup services. If your furniture is heavy, we recommend calling your nearest Goodwill and asking if they offer this particular service.

Habitat for Humanity Restore

If you need someone to pick up your furniture in a hurry, call local Habitat for Humanity Restore. This non-profit organization is the first choice of many people for donating used furniture, such as softly used sofas, dining tables, consoles, tables, chairs, and beds. This organization is managed by Habitat for Humanity. Non-profit stores sell used goods at a fraction of the retail price. It is preferable that furniture is in a good shape, so make sure you store wood furniture the right way. ReStores proceeds to build houses and shelters in local communities and around the world. To donate your furniture to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, call and schedule an export time before moving. Pickup is free.

Pickup Please

If you want to get rid of small furniture and household items, we recommend contacting Pickup Please. You can donate your items to Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). This organization sells various products that are neatly used to obtain funding for local, state and national VVA programs. As for furniture, the organization accepts only small items, including mirrors, nightstands, headboards, and office chairs. All donors need to do is schedule their pickup on the Internet and leave the marked boxes in front of the door.

Salvation Army

Another popular way to donate used furniture before or after moving is to donate it to one of the family stores of the Salvation Army. All proceeds from the Family Stores fund Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers. According to the Salvation Army, these centers help more than 60,000 people solve various life problems each year and help them reunite with their communities as productive members. With almost 1,500 family stores located throughout the United States, finding a Salvation Army Store is easy. Those who donate furniture can either deliver it to the point of issue or plan the collection of furniture by the Salvation Army.

What to keep in mind when donating used furniture

  • Write off taxes. Do not forget to deduct your donations from taxes. After you finish donating used furniture, the organization will be able to provide you with a tax receipt on the same day. When the tax season arrives, these receipts will help you save a lot.
  • The state of your things. We do not want to break it, but charities will not accept anything. Your items must be in good shape. If you are not sure that your product is in good shape for donation, we recommend contacting the charity directly to ask. Most donation sites provide a list of items they do and don’t accept on their site. Here are a few examples of items that most likely will not be accepted anywhere: soft objects with cracks, stains, tears or pet smells; hazardous materials and chemicals; mirrors without frame or glass; broken glass; storm windows and windows with one glass; metal blinds; corner baths; artificial marble baths; broken floor; lighting that does not work; encyclopedias and textbooks; and electronics, which is outdated.

Other ways to get rid of furniture

  • Sell. Think your furniture is worth selling? In addition to donations, you can try to sell your furniture through an online store, a mobile application or a garage sale. A few shopping sites worth considering include the Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, and Nextdoor.com.
  • Consign. You do not have time to sell the furniture yourself? Let your local consignment store do it for you. If the piece of furniture is vintage or valuable, we advise you to bring it to a local consignment store of furniture to list it. Usually, when you sell through a consignment store, the store takes most of the cutout and gives you the rest. Before sending, be sure to ask what percentage of the sale you will receive.
  • Storage. Not quite ready to say goodbye to that old sofa? Try to keep your furniture in a safe and secure place to store. Safe storage solutions in Arizona are very easy to find, just ask around.

Finished donating used furniture? If this is the case, then it’s time to find the best transport company that can cope with your upcoming move. We at Moving Buddies AZ take special care of your items, so you can be sure that your relocation will be in safe hands. Good luck and happy moving!
